Extending Your Visa and TIP in Colombia

Colombia, a vast and diverse country, offers countless adventures for moto travelers. It will not be the first time that the 90-day visa may not be sufficient to explore its entirety. ;-) This guide will walk you through the process of renewing your visa and temporary import permit (TIP) in Colombia.

First: Planning and Preparation to Renew

  • Start Early: Begin the renewal process at least a week in advance, maybe up to 3.  I have heard of being denied for doing it too early though. I had heard 10 days in advance was good, and it worked out for me, but I did mine through Pereira.  Doing it through Medellin or Bogota could easily take longer.

  • Choose a Location: Select a Colombian city with a DIAN office to handle your TIP renewal. You will want to be within a couple hours because you will need to bring your motorcycle to the DIAN office.  A list of DIAN offices is available HERE.

Renewing Your Personal Colombia Visa

  • Online Application: Submit visa extension applications for each individual using this link: HERE

  • Gather Documents: Prepare clear photos of your passport face page and entry stamp.

  • Create PDF: Convert the photos into a compressed PDF file (1 MB or smaller).

  • Submit Application: Pay the renewal fee (around $30 USD) and wait for approval. It can be approved within 48 hours, but it will vary - It's Colombia after all ;-).

Renewing Your Temporary Import Permit (TIP) for Colombia

  • Online Application: Once you have your visa renewal PDF, submit the TIP extension application here: HERE

  • Provide Documents: Attach your visa renewal PDF and other documents (SOAT, passport, proof of extension reason, vehicle title, registration, etc).

  • Wait for Response: After a day or two (hopefully) you will be contacted by a DIAN representative who will be your contact to renew your TIP.

  • In-Person Inspection: The DIAN representative will help you schedule an appointment, typically within another day or two.  Go to their DIAN office with your passport, vehicle documents, and TIP.

  • Submit Documents: Provide the required documents, let the representative inspect the vehicle, and wait while they prepare the documents for submission. The process at the DIAN will take an hour or two, then you will leave with an email saying the renewal was submitted, but it will take another day or two for the approval to come through.
