What to expect?
This is Colombia as it comes. We don’t just ride; we immerse. You will navigate jungle tracks, cross rivers, summit 4,200-meter peaks, and relax in hidden hot springs. You will meet the locals, taste the history, and ride paths that only a few have seen. We stay in rustic hostels, fincas, eco-lodges and small hotels, often family-run. Don’t expect polished luxury. Instead, expect warmth, character, and stories. Hosts who cook for you. Locals who want to talk. Places you wouldn’t find on your own.
What you'll experience during this motorcycle tour
Day 0: Arrival at Donkey Sunrise
Welcome home! You’ll arrive at our HQ, Donkey Sunrise, where we’ll get you settled with a great meal and a warm welcome. We’ll cover the briefing, explain the route, and get your motorcycle perfectly set up and ready to roll. Tonight is about relaxing, meeting the group and preparing for the adventure ahead.
Day 1: Into the mountains we go!
We kick off the ride by crossing a spectacular mountain ridge with sweeping views of the valley below. The route takes us onto a beautiful dirt road that cuts through a biodiversity hotspot. Expect distinct climate changes as we climb from the tropical warmth of the valleys up into the fresh, cooler mountain air by the end of the day. Keep your eyes open; this area is teeming with waterfalls and boasts one of the highest densities of bird species in the country.
Day 2: The herritage of Abejorral
We mix off-road trails with scenic pavement, trading the usual tourist routes for a deep dive into the Andes. After a traditional lunch, we ride through lush green valleys to reach Abejorral, a beautifully preserved colonial gem famous for its historic architecture and authentic mountain atmosphere.
Day 3: The jungle escape
Today we leave the colonial charm behind and ride deeper into the wild side of Antioquia. The route brings a beautiful mix of mountain roads, flowing dirt sections, river valleys and lush green jungle scenery. We’ll pass through colourful villages, stop for coffee along the way and keep trading altitude for warmer, more tropical air.
Day 4: Remote Canyons & River Crossings
A later start leads to a day of pure adventure riding. Jungle trails and water crossings galore. We lunch in Puerto Triunfo before heading deep into the canyon. This evening is all about disconnecting. We stay in a very rustic, primitive spot right in the heart of the canyon. A true local experience.
Day 5: The emerald trail
Morning starts with a 4-hour guided hike into the canyon (water-ready shoes required!). Afterwards, we ride the "Emerald Trail" through San Pablo de Borbur: the heart of Colombia’s emerald mining region. We finish the day in the stunning colonial town of Villa de Leyva, surrounded by history and cobblestone streets.
Day 6: Uncharted paths
We leave Villa de Leyva early for a scenic mountain loop through rural Colombia, riding winding roads, green valleys and small villages along the way. After lunch, we swap the bike for our water shoes for a short hike to an impressive hidden waterfall. In the afternoon, we ride back to Villa de Leyva for a relaxed evening in one of Colombia’s most charming colonial towns.
Day 7: Backroad riding
We start the day with a relaxed morning and some free time to explore town, grab a coffee and pick up laundry before getting back on the bikes. Today’s route gives us a nice mix of easy riding, scenic backroads and the option for a steeper downhill section for those who want a little extra challenge. After lunch in a small local village, we continue on an off-road path towards our overnight stop: an old hotel with plenty of character and stories in its walls.
Day 8: Mountain roads & river country
We start with an early breakfast in town before riding out towards warmer, lower landscapes. Depending on the group and conditions, we may take a scenic mountain detour for an extra dose of views and twisty roads. After a coffee stop and lunch along the way, we continue towards river country. If the weather and water levels allow, we’ll finish the ride with a river crossing before reaching our overnight stop near Norcasia. In the afternoon, there’s time to relax or enjoy optional activities like tubing or horseback riding.
Day 9: From river heat to mountain air
We leave Norcasia behind and start the day in warm, tropical river country. After about an hour on the bikes, we stop for a refreshing swim before continuing through the lowlands towards lunch.
In the afternoon, the route changes character. We can take the quicker way through the valley, passing through the historic plains around Armero, or choose the longer scenic option through Casabianca, where the road climbs back into the mountains with cooler air, tighter corners and wide views over green Andean slopes. By the end of the day, we reach Morillo, a quiet mountain town where the temperature drops and the pace slows down.
Day 10: The big finale: touching the roof of the Andes!
Prepare for the pinnacle of the journey: Los Nevados National Park. We ride over the high-altitude pass of Nevado del Ruiz at 4,200 meters (13,700 ft). After the high-altitude thrill, we’ll pause for a well-earned lunch and a soothing soak in natural thermal baths. The final leg is pure riding joy, carving through the coffee region’s beautiful asphalt twisties all the way back to home base at Donkey Sunrise. Here, we'll have our big farewell dinner & share all the memories we've made together.
